My General thoughts and musings
By Nigel on Friday, 21 September 2007 10:47 AM
mmm, I have been very naughty...  I haven't flown my MT in quite a while.

I am still waiting for the head block to come into Modelflight.  I think it has been 3 or 4 months since I ordered that part.  Might start looking to see if I can get it elsewhere.  I am also thinking of getting the alloy mixing arms.  I don't want to get rid of too much of the plastic parts, as i would rather have the cheaper plastic break in the event of a crash than the more expensive alloy parts.

I did manage...

I decided to dye black some of the white plastic parts of my Mini Titan.

Was a very interesting 41st and 42nd flight today...

I hadn't changed anything on the heli or my transmitter, yet i was having a really hard time controlling the heli once in the air.  She was drifting all over the place, and would start sliding forwards.  when i would pull back on the stick slightly she would jump up about 1/2 to 1 metre depending on how much throttle i had wound in.  Even the head speed was all over the place.  But the head speed was varying from takeoff to takeoff.  If i landed and brought the blades to a complete stop, then took off again the head speed would be different.  Even when i switched batteries, it was still behaing the same.

Well a few more successful flights over the weekend - Four flights in total

Most of the flights i practised just left and right side in hovering, and getting used to the controls when left or right side in.  At this stage, i am able to hover right side in a lot more confidently and easily than left side in.

The last half of flight 39 and most of flight 40 I spent in forward flight and reversing back, and getting used to looking up at the heli with some tree-top hovering.

mmm Been a few weeks since my last flight   Unfortunately I have been busy with work or home life.

Anyways... You have got to love these lovely winter days... the warmth of the winter sun, just a hint of a breeze, and the sky speckled with clouds... mmm so warming... also wonderful weather for flying

'Twas a beautiful winters day to go flying.  About 15 degrees, with only as slight breeze.

Mainly did hovering, although a couple of times git her up quite high - bout 5metres i guess, and got a bit scared and brought her down to an easily managable height - 2metres - for me anyways.  After this i just flew forwards slowly down the driveway and then "reversed" back.  Im thinking this is why i got such a good flight time for the battery charge used.

Flight lasted about 7 1/2 minutes

I bought some Align 325mm Carbon fibre rotor blades.  I knew they would need spacers to work with the Mini-Titan, but thought i would make some myself.  Didn't have much luck... I could not get the blades to track properly.  So i decided to put my new set of stock wooden blades.  these tracked within half a blade of each other, and I was not able to get it closer than this. I took it out for a flight.  I had also changed the expo from +40 to +60 as suggested to see how it was.  I found it too slow...

Well... I went to ModelFlight, and bought the alloy Flybar control arms, and the Blade spacers.  All i need to get now is the Alloy head block and i will be able to put all the alloy parts on (head, flybar control arms, washout base)  I figure that head wise these are the most important bits to have in alloy.  That way you still have some cheap weak links in the event of a crash.

With the blade spacers in place, i switched back to the Align 235mm carbons (Align part number HS1231T).  The...

Another great flight.

Similar to the last flight, i was taking off from under my back verandah, and moving out into the back yard and then flying back under the verandah.  I was doing this until the blades started getting really loud.  A "clacking" sound (similar to when a magpie swoops)  I brought her back under the verandah and landed.  Spooling down, i was going to check to see if all was ok.  it was then that i heard the rain on the roof...  It must have been rain hitting the blades that was making the noise.

Another 2 successful flights.  Basically more hovering and moving around my back yard.  i got 5:30mins and 8mins from the two packs.  Not sure why the big differences between the flight times. on the second flight, I put a piece of wood down on the ground to take-off and land on.  The piece of wood was only just longer than the heli, so provided a nice little challenge.

The backyard is a little more confined than the front yard, and i was experiencing quite a bit of turbulence.  I was actually...
